Don's Challenge I: Death

(This file looks best in wordpad)

Filename: Dc1Full.wad v 2.0
What new in this version? Check Dc1History.txt -> Dec. 6

Author: Cory Whittle

E-mail: cwhittle@isn.net

Homepage: http://www.dc3.f2s.com

Maps By: id Software, Mike Lundy, and myself.

PLEASE NOTE, that this
game uses a modified EPISODE 1 as it's base, so if that
bothers you, do not play it! Note that there is nothing in here
that isn't in Doom 1.9 Shareware (in terms of registered
material).

Engine: EDGE 1.27 ONLY
Playable Episode for Doom 2 Only

How To Play: edge32.exe -file dc1full.wad
gledge32.exe -file dc1full.wad

HINT: Let EDGE create the gwa file, quit, THEN start a new game
for best results.

NOTE: "EXTRA BLOOD MODE" is not supported. It is recommended
you turn it off.
Also, Shadows and Dynamic Light are used, but not fully
neccessary for gameplay.

SLOWDOWN ISSUES:
If you find the game runs slow, try the following:
- Turn EXTRAS off in the gameplay menu
- Turn DETAIL LEVEL down (it only affects the sky, not
textures or sprites, but it speeds the game up.)
- Turn Dynamic Lighting off. This game makes large use
of it.
- Try running with -fastsprites on the command line

Description: You are Don P. Tello, a regular "Joe Average", currently a police
officer, a retired Marine Corps veteran, and a family man.
after a hard week's work, you decide to use your day off to
just relax. What happens next is anything but relaxing.
See further down for advanced description.

Technical Description:
4 level conversion, for Doom 2 only.
Bonus "Survival" episode included!

NOTE: This is the basic "engine" that will support the rest
of the Don's Challenge Trilogy. Weapons and monsters will
change in each part however.

The Don's Challenge Series uses a lot of sprites and sounds
for various effects. Slower machines may suffer FPS hits.
Development Machine:
PIII 450
256 MB pc100
generic "soundblaster compatable" soundcard
Intel 810 8MB video with really old drivers (Win98SE CD).
The only slowdowns I get are with dynamic lighting in large
areas, especially outdoors.

Credits and Thanks to all the following:
-Chris Pisarczyk for some Quake1 Sprites from QuakeDooM
-Cyb for the starry sky
-Oniko Hakubi for feedback and ddf ideas
-Mike Lundy for the house level I severely modified
-Mike Gummelt for sprites and a sound or two
-Sebastien Baquet for the Doomguy face I modified
-"TCHG" for a couple of zombie sounds
-Regis LeBoite and Edgard Noel for a couple of decorations
-Black Shadow for a couple more small sprites.
-And all those who gave ideas and support

Also, thanks to the following Software companies who I gratefully (financially)
support, and who I borrowed resources from:
-id Software (Doom, Doom2, Quake2)
-3dRealms (Duke3d, Shadow Warrior)
-Monolith (Blood)
-Xatrix (Kingpin, Redneck Rampage)
-Valve (Half-Life, Counter-Strike)
-Gearbox (Opposing Force)
-Raven (Hexen, Heretic)
-EPIC (Unreal, Unreal Tournament)
-Rogue Software (Strife)
-Lobotamy Software (Exhumed)

COPYRIGHT AND PERMISSIONS :

I would very much prefer you NOT use anything here as a base for your own work,
or for that matter flat out ripping it for your own project. I sound anal because
it's happened to me many times before, and I don't appreciate having my work
stolen behind my back. Ask me for permission, as I will gladly help you out
in one way or another if possible.

THE STORY SO FAR...

Note: This is recapped within the game in a short intermission.

- Quick Plot -
-------
Don has been chosen by Death to 'donate' his soul to her for her own use.
However, Don must prove worthy of this 'honor' beforehand, as well as provide
Death (Mortis) with some entertainment.

Mortis has chosen Don for his bloody past, his tours of duty in Vietnam, his
long career as a police narcotics officer, etc. Don tries to explain that
he never kills for fun, but it apparently doesn't matter to Mortis.

She decides to give him the survival workout of a lifetime.
An "overachieving" Corporation had been experimenting with something they
shouldn't have. Mortis was forced to pull their entire facility into hell to
contain them. She sent her minions through, and wiped out the facility staff,
and zombified the rest. Since then, she has held a few of her challenges there,
pitting humans against bloodthirsty monsters.

Don is no acception. Mortis plays fair, and gives him a weapon to start with..
just a rusty old 6-shooter. Something more substantial would be better.

Don wants to go back home, but apparently, that won't be the case whether he
wins *or* looses the Challenge - Well, no sense waiting for the inevitable.
Might as well kick some on the way out.. this could even be fun.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPOILERS:

--------

If you've played the dcIII demo, you'll have seen the bare minimum of the "DC Engine".
All the cool effects and more await in the full versions of the Trilogy.

Here, you'll see:

-weapon specific damage to monsters
-very UN-DOOMISH weapons, complete with many effects
-extensive use of Dynamic Lighting if your computer can handle it
-Massive HUB-like level as the focal point of this episode
-special effects
-particles (blood squirts, bullet chips, liquid drips, etc)
-deep water effects, complete with swimming and drowning
-MANY ambient sounds, fire, wind, buzzing, tech noises.
-Much usage of Radius Scripting
-Interactive scenery. Blow debris off trees, break lamps, take maps off walls, etc.
-AND MUCH MUCH MORE

-------
Weapons

Unarmed: (1)
Bare fists, can kill smaller enemies, but try to find something better if possible.

Brass Knuckles: (1)
Makes your fists remarkably more efficient.

Large Machete Blade: (1)
Quite powerful melee weapon, and the longest reach available. Only useful if you
run out of gas for the chainsaw.

Rusty old .357 Revolver: (2)
Very powerful, but slow and has a very small capacity. Luckily, bullets are plentiful.
Take care, as frantic firing will result in horrible bullet spray. Take the time to aim.

9mm Automatic: (2)
Not nearly as powerful as the revolver, but boasts a larger magazine and can be fired
quickly with moderate accuracy loss.

12-gauge Shotgun: (3)
Kind of rare, but a great tool none the less. An older style model, with wood trim and
a strap. Holds 8 rounds. Really good pellet dispersal, so it's still useful at range.
Use the secondary attack to fire 2 quick rounds in succession.

Scatter Gun: (3)
Ungodly deadly at close range. Hold the trigger down to fire both barrels almost
simultaneously. Slow reload.

Double Pistols: (4)
These foreign model pistols are a matched set, and feature a 16 round clip each.
These share ammo with the 9mm pistol, and can eat up bullets if you're not careful.
Bad bullet spread, but very quick action. Not exactly Don's signature twin .45's, but
most useful none the less.

Grenade Launcher: (5)
This handly little number fires explosive 12-guage shells, and works via a pump action
for fast results. It suffers from a small 6-round magazine however.
Note that the fired grenade will drop over time and explode on contact.

MM2 10mm Autopistol: (6)
A modified 1911, set up to fire at insane speeds. Can be outfitted with any manner of
customizations, but you won't find any in this episode. Instead you're stuck with the
standard 30-round clip and 12 rounds per second ROF. Shares ammo with the .357, so
choose carefully between power (.357) and speed (auto).

Lighter: (8)
Use it to light up dark areas, or combine it with accessories.
If you try hard enough, you can set things on fire with it, although it's not
recommended. Use with Dynamic Light on for best results.

-Lighter Accessories:
-Smokes: (8)
Rare. Light up to slowly heal yourself. Takes about 40 seconds per smoke, and
will heal you only up to 100%. Note that the effect is RANDOM, so you'll never get
a uniform amount of health. You start with only a couple smokes, but a fresh pack will
net you 20.
New to version 2.0, you can smoke to heal yourself in all Doom and Doom2 levels,
plus you can just light up and forget about it!

-Whiskey: (8)
Quite Rare. Take a swig to make yourself less vulnerable to pain.
Will only let you drink up to 100% armor.
This cheap-ass shit will burn going down, so expect to lose a little
health when you drink. You'll get around 10 drinks per bottle, so stock up.
NOTE: Booze only works in the Don's Challenge episode!!!
Since you can't find booze anywhere else, it makes sense.

Chainsaw: (9)
A really fast and powerful melee weapon with a good reach. Be careful, as it will use
up it's fuel quite quick. Pick up other chainsaws or gas cans to refuel.

Gas Can: (9)
Primarily used for adding to your gas supply, but this item has a few other uses:
-Shoot the gas can to make it explode into an incidiary explosion and spray flaming
gasoline out.
-Use the can as a weapon, dumping flammable gas on the ground, which can be ignited.
Work quickly, as the gas puddles will eventually evaporate and sift into the ground.
Use this to create firey death traps into which you can lure monsters.

--------

New Items to collect:

Uppers (Speed):
The ultimate powerup. Maximizes your health and armor, makes you invulnerable,
and gives you super strength! Act fast, because these effects only last 30 seconds.
Also, your vision will be fucked up during your high.

Big Box 'o' Health:
Heals you up to 110% in increments, to a maximum of 50. If you don't
use the entire box in one go, you can use the rest later.

Boxes of Shells / Bullets:
Similar to the Box 'o' Health, you'll only use what you can hold.
Bullets: Increment of 10, max. 50. (Bullets come in 9mm or 10mm)
Shells: Increment of 4, max. 16.

Clip Belt:
Doubles your 9mm and 10mm bullet capacity, AND gives you a few clips as well.

Bandoleer of Shells:
Doubles your shotgun shell capacity and gives you ammo too.

Bandoleer of grenade shells:
Doubles capacity, gives ammo.

Ammo Box:
These little green ammo boxes contain a small stash of 9mm clips, 10mm clips,
and some shells.

Combat Armour:
Adds 100 to your armour. Note, the armour you recieve from pills is different
than actual kevlar, so a vest will replace it, and vice versa.

Gas Can:
As noted above, can be picked up, or shot to kill any nearby enemies.

Corpses:
Dead humans and failed Challengees almost always have some type of ammo on their
corpses.. be sure to check them.

----------

New Creatures to kill:

Zombies:
Walking corpses resurrected by demons. Tough to put down, but you can knock them over
if you need to make a quick gettaway. Stay clear.. they can only hit you, but man
does it hurt!

Possessed Humans:
NOTE: in GL mode, you can't see the palettized colors.
These various humans were probably part of the staff who were called into duty
when the NAC facility became corrupted by Mortis' creatures.
You'll encounter ones with pistols, automatic rifles, and shotguns.
These zombies will drop ammo, but don't expect them to yeild any loot if you
happen to set them ablaze or splatter them with explosions.

Spectres:
Comes in two flavors: Shadow, and Semi-invisible. The semi-invisible ones are
extremely hard to see, especially if you aren't looking for them.

Imps:
Standard, No real change from Doom Imps, but they throw flaming fireballs that
burn you quite bad.

-----------
Levels:

Map33:
You wake up in Mortis' Lair, deep in her corner of Hell. Listen to what she has to say,
then go on with the challenge.

Map34:
The Doomed NAC facility is also smack-dab in the middle of hell. Explore it's many
floors, and kill all the monsters if possible.
Note, that the facility is set up to be NON-LINEAR, so you can choose which ways to go
or skip some floors entirely. It's up to you.

Map35:
After you defeat the facility, you are now back in Mortis' lair. A new battle ensues
when you refuse to give up your soul. Do what you have to.

Map36:
Now finished with Hell, you are wisked back to your home. It's night time, and apparently
your antics in Hell have kept you busy for a couple of DAYS.
Find your notebook or explore the house.

Map37:
SURVIVAL!
Fast Monsters : ON
Respawning Monsters : ON
Respawning Items : ON
Double Ammo : ON
Cheats : OFF
Use the goodies Mortis provides you with to try and last 10 minutes. Try and get
as many kills as possible.

-----------
HINTS AND TIPS:

-There is ONE map on the wall somewhere in the facility. Try to find it, as it will
show you where you haven't gone yet.

-There is also a Medical Lab in the facility. There you can find enough health to
get yourself back on your feet.

-Don't forget that box of ammo or health kit that is still useable! Try not to waste
a box of ammo if you only need one or two rounds.

-Fire is your friend. A burning monster can easily set nearby creatures alight too!
Imps are only immune to their own fire, not yours.

-If you need to reload, don't do it during a firefight! Switch to a full weapon then
continue.
HINT: If your weapon's clip is empty, switch to another weapon, then back to the empty
one, and it will be full!

-Turn CROUCHING on. You don't HAVE TO use it, but it's there.

-With Dynamic lighting on, you can shoot lamps to darken the area.
Freshly busted lamps emit sparks, so don't get electrocuted.

-The facility is not linear. There are duplicates of the blue and yellow keys.
the only unique keys are the red key and the bypass diskette.
The only keys you NEED to get are blue, yellow, and bypass disk.
The levels you HAVE to do regardless are:
01,05,07 (the quickest run possible)
alternatively:
01,02,07,05 (second quickest)
alternatively:
01,05,03,07 (longer)
In the original comic, Don does it this way:
01, 07, 04, 07, 05 (presumably, I left out all keys but red)
CHANCES ARE... you will have played this level one by one, and that's okay too.
Remember, you don't have to clear an entire level before moving on to the next
or going back to a previous one!

-There are rarely only ONE instance of any particular weapon.

-DO NOT try swimming in slime. Only swim in clean or muddy water! If you get too deep
in slime, you may not be able to climb back out!

-Exploded or Burnt zombies will not drop ammo. If you're low on bullets, try for
a clean kill.

-Most weapons will be accurate if you take the time to aim. Rampaging will
severely compromise this.

-Use tall things for cover. Lamps, Electrical columns, and trees will work.

-Booze and alcohol are there for a reason. Use it!

-Need a rest? Monsters will under no circumstances enter an inter-level elevator.

-In SURVIVAL!, you can find an easy refuge at the beginning of Floor 5, in the secret
room with the medikit and ammo box.

-In SURVIVAL!, you'll find the double pistols and Autopistol to be your best weapons.
Pissed off monsters will fire back at you very rapidly, so put them down quick!

------------------------------------------

BUGS AND ANOMALIES

-The ambient sounds are plentiful, and as such MAY slow down low-end computers sometimes.
Try turning EXTRAS off in the gameplay menu

-When saving or loading a game (especially in the massive facility), give the engine
some leeway, and don't rush the process. It has to create or load a 360kb file, plus
the 900KB level.

-Also in GL mode, some weapons seem to jump and shift around the screen, regardless
of their offsets in the wad.

-Bandoleers and Gas cans can be picked up even if you don't need them.

-if you crouch while under water, your health will disappear rapidly! This has to
do with the falling damage, and is an EDGE bug.

-During the fight with mortis, you may find she either CANNOT be killed or
gets killed rather quickly.
This is part of the game. If you read what she says, you'll know your weapons cannot
kill her. Find another means.
Even this MAY TAKE A LONG TIME! It's RANDOM. Don't worry, you CAN beat the game.

These are all the bugs I've EVER encountered, and I've done a large amount of testing.
If you find a bug, please contact me (e-mail address above) with ALL THE DETAILS.
